The following is a (very incomplete and continually evolving) list of opportunities specifically for undergraduates: scholarships, internships, publications, and the like. Make sure to go to the actual web pages to check deadlines and requirements (eg, some are specifically for women, some require nominations, some are only for juniors, and so on). Note that, with assorted exceptions, deadlines for fellowships tend to be in the fall and deadline for summer internships/research-experiences tend to be in the spring.

  • CURJ Caltech undergraduate research journal. Publishes letters, reviews, and original research articles by undergraduates. Also has staff positions available.
  • JYI The journal of young investigators. Publishes feature, review, and research articles by undergraduates. Also has staff positions available for undergraduates.
  • Summer Internships
  • An ACM list of internship opportunities for students (industry)

  • NSA: 2008 college student summer programs. must be US citizen. (deadline: 10/15/07)
  • Fermilab Summer Internships in Science and Technology: 12 week summer internship for minority college students. (deadline: 2/15/08)
  • SUPERB-IT: summer research program at Berkeley (deadline: 1/31/08)
  • NREIP: 10 week summer research opportunity for juniors and seniors at participating navy laboratories. Mostly requires US citizenship; permanent residents ok at some labs. (deadline: 1/14/08)
  • NSF: research experiences for undergraduates (REU) program. can search for a location based on area of interest. generally need to be US citizen or permanent resident. (deadline: varies by location)
  • NASA: 10-week summer and 15-week spring/fall programs. Need to be a US citizen. (deadline: 1/31/08 for summer 2008 session)
  • NIST-Boulder: Summer research fellowships, need to be nominated by college. (deadline: 2/15/08)
  • Google: internships at Google (currently accepting applications for start dates between 4/08 and 7/08)
  • IBM: internships at IBM research labs (deadline: varies)
  • AFIT: internships at Air Force Institute of Technology. must be US citizen. (deadline: 2/28/07)
  • LLNL: science and technology internships; US citizenship required for some, but not all (deadline: 2/28 each year, 1/31 for best chances)
  • CRA-W and CDC: distributed mentor project. program that matches undergraduate women and underrepresented minorities with faculty for summer research projects. (deadline: 2/15/2008)
  • SULI: Department of Energy "science undergraduate laboratory internships". program for internships at any of a number of national labs. (deadline: varies)
  • HERE@ORNL: Higher education research experiences at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. (deadline: best by 2/1/2007, but can apply anytime)
  • IBM Research: can click on a link to see undergraduate summer & co-op research positions. (deadline: varies)
  • MIT Lincoln Laboratory: Summer research program. (deadline: submit resume)
  • Apple Internship Program: Summer internships. (deadline: submit resume)
  • IM-SURE: 10 week summer integrated micro/nano research experience at UC Irvine. (deadline: 3/26/07)
  • Scholarships + Internships
  • Microsoft: technical scholarships for undergraduates, may include a summer internship. (deadline: 2/1/08)
  • Department of Homeland Security: apply in sophomore year, 2 years of funding in school, internship during summer between those two years, DHS job after graduation (deadline: 1/23/07).
  • Scholarships, Awards
  • Google : Anita Borg scholarship. Awards for women who are undergraduate CS majors graduating in 2009; others for women who are enrolled in graduate programs in CS 2008-2009. (deadline: 2/1/08)
  • CRA : outstanding undergraduate award. must be nominated by school, preference for seniors. two awards given: one to a woman and the other to a man. (deadline: mid-October)
  • Hispanic College Fund: ALPFA scholarship program. must demonstrate financial need. (deadline: 3/15/07)
  • Vanguard : Vanguard women in technology scholarship program. must be a woman and a US citizen/permanent resident who's a junior majoring in CS or other related field. (deadline: 1/31/07)
  • Fellowships for graduate study

    If you are applying to graduate school, you should be applying for outside fellowships as well.

  • NSF : NSF (National Science Foundation) graduate research fellowships (deadline: 11/2/07 for computer and information science and engineering)
  • Hertz : Hertz foundation graduate fellowship awards. (deadline: 11/2/07)
  • DoD : Department of Defense "National defense science and engineering graduate fellowship". (deadline: 1/7/08)
  • DoD : Department of Defense "Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) defense scholarship program", must be US citizen. (deadline: 12/14/07)
  • DOE : Department of Energy "Computational science graduate fellowship", must be US citizen or permanent resident. (deadline: 1/16/08)
  • NPSC: National Physical Science Consortium "graduate fellowships in the physical sciences". Includes computer science, attemps to "recruit a broad pool of applicants with special emphasis on underrepresented minorities and women". (deadline: 11/5/07)
  • NRC : US Nuclear Regulatory Commission "Graduate fellowship program". Requires committment to work for NRC for some period of time. (deadline: ??)
  • Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships: Fellowships for new Americans (resident alien, naturalized citizen, or child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens). (deadline: 11/1/07)
  • Ford Foundation Predoctoral Diversity Fellowships: Fellowships for individuals who, among other things, "can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students". (deadline: 11/15/07)
  • DHS Fellowship: Three year fellowship, must complete 10 week summer internship at a DHS-designated facility between years 1 and 2. (deadline: 1/23/07)
  • GEM : National consortium for graduate degrees for minorities in engineering and science. For US citizens who belong to an underrepresented minority group. Must use fellowship at one of their member universities. (deadline: 11/1/07)
  • Other
  • Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship: for those with (recent) degrees in science, engineering, or math and who want to teach high schol science and/or math.
