Textbook: Matt Bishop, Computer Security: Art and Science, Addison Wesley, 2003, ISBN 9780201440997.


Prerequisite: Officially, CS 81 and 105. The general idea is that this is a good course to take after the requirements for the major, not before.


Course Description: An in-depth study of selected topics in computer security. Topics are likely to include authentication, access control, confinement, and policy, with attention to specification and means of implementation. We will look at novel programming languages and operating systems. The course will not emphasize hacking or cryptography.


Course Requirements: Attendance and active participation. Reading. One or two presentations. One final paper or project. Occasional assignments. No examinations.
